  1. Manny Pacquiao vs. Keith Thurman Jr. Welterweight Title Fight Set for July 20

It turns out the rumors about Manny Pacquiao not fighting Keith Thurman Jr. were false.

Premier Boxing Champions announced Saturday that Pacquiao will square off with Thurman on July 20 for the WBA world welterweight championship.

Earlier this week, Sean Gibbons, an adviser to Pacquiao, disputed reports an agreement had been made for this fight, per ESPN.com's Dan Rafael:

"July 13 or July 20 is possible. The Senator is still working out his political duties here before making a final decision but is looking to returning to the ring in July. After the May 13 elections, the Senator will get in serious conversations to move to close a fight. Until he gets done with elections he is not committed to anything."

Pacquiao (61-7, two draws) must have felt confident about where things stand with the upcoming election in the Philippines to officially sign the contract.

July 20 will mark Pacquiao's first appearance since a unanimous-decision win over Adrien Broner in January to retain the WBA welterweight title. Pac-Man is just 7-4 in his last 11 fights dating back to 2012.

Thurman (29-0, one no-contest) defeated Josesito Lopez by majority decision on Jan. 26. It was his first match in nearly two years due to various injuries, including undergoing elbow surgery in May 2017.

  2. Manny Pacquiao vs. Keith Thurman: Fight date, time, PPV price, odds, full card

Eight division world champion, and one of the sport's top stars, Manny Pacquiao challenges WBA (super) welterweight champion Keith Thurman on July 20 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas in what has the potential to be the fight of the year.

Pacquiao (61-7-2, 39 KOs), the WBA (regular) welterweight champion, fought in January and dominated Adrien Broner to win by a lopsided decision. The senator from the Philippines showed up to the Errol Spence Jr.-Mikey Garcia fight in March and even stepped inside the ring at the request of Spence, who was pushing for a fight with the legend.

But, the 40-year-old Pacquiao decided to shift his focus to Thurman, instead.

"I chose Keith Thurman because he's undefeated and I want to prove that at age 40 I can still beat a great fighter like Keith," Pacquaio said at a press conference to formally announce the fight.

Thurman (29-0, one no-contest, 22 KOs) made a triumphant return to the ring after a 22-month layoff due to injuries, one week after Pacquiao beat Broner, and defeated a game Josesito Lopez by unanimous decision.

"Pacquiao wants a challenge, and I'm very grateful to be sharing a ring with a legend," Thurman also said at the presser. "If you understand boxing history, you know that times change. I believe boxing is in a new era. Come July 20, Pacquiao will disappear. He'll always be remembered in the sport, but I'm doing to Manny Pacquiao, what he did to Oscar De La Hoya."

Thurman presents the most stringent test to date for Pacquiao since he lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr., back in May 2015.

Can "One Time" prove to the world how great he is and show the Flipino icon that there's a new era upon us? Or does "Pac-Man" defy "Father Time" and prove he still has plenty to offer at the age of 40?

  3. Pacquiao vs. Thurman Update: Arum Fears Pacquiao May Incur Brain Damage

Bob Arum is concerned about the dangers ahead for Manny Pacquiao now that the veteran fighter is in his 40’s.

Boxing promoter Bob Arum may no longer be associated with Pacquiao in his fights, but he seems to be still concerned about the future of the Filipino boxing legend. Arum, 87, told reporters in a recent interview that he fears Pacquiao could end up with a brain damage just like what happened to another veteran boxer, Zab Judah, recently.

The veteran promoter revealed what he truly feels about Pacquiao still being an active fighter at 41 years old, hinting that he thinks it may be time for Pacman to hang up his gloves, Channel News Asia reported. "Look, I love Manny Pacquiao," Arum told reporters.

Arum reflected on Pacquiao’s legacy and what he sees happening to boxers when they reach their 40s, an age bracket in which the fighters are already past their prime.

"I have a whole history with Manny Pacquiao. I'm really rooting for Manny Pacquiao, but you've gotta realise that he's 41 years of age, and when a fighter has been around so long passes his late 30s and goes into his 40s, he's not gonna be as good as he was in his prime,” Arum explained.

The veteran promoter wished Pacman all the best but revealed more factors to be concerned about, including the possibility of incurring brain damage. "I wish him the best and I hope he wins the fight but I am concerned, as I would be for any fighter, that when they get to a certain age that they probably should not be fighting anymore,” Arum pointed.

“You know, I mean, the doctors will tell you that the cranium as you get older, thins out. So a guy that's younger gets hit and the cranium absorbs the blow so that it doesn't affect the brain matter,” Arum continued. "When they get older the cranium is thinner, and when you get hit it affects ? that would be the worst thing in the world if Manny Pacquiao suffered brain damage at this point. Zab Judah is a perfect example of how dangerous it is for a guy to continue fighting into his 40s."

Arum is the second person in the boxing industry who recently expressed concern over Pacquiao’s status. Gennady Golovkin previously said in an interview with Sports Illustrated that Manny should be careful with Thurman in their upcoming bout as one punch can change his life.
